World without religion

What do you think life would be like if there was no religious beliefs in the world and people would only use reason and whatever scientific knowledge they have here and now to coexist? Supposedly eighty something of the Planet Earth's population believes in "something" and many people claim that morals are bad, life in this world is getting worse and worse, so if majority of them are believers what do you think would happen if we took it away?

  • Well, I think things might be calmer but there will always be someone thinking they have all the answers and are better, etc.
There will always be people who could talk you out of a limb and therefore get people to follow whatever they have to say about anything.

    Nice idea tho.

  • Although I am not religious I think religion keeps people somewhat on the straight and narrow (or some religions) out of fear or guilt or maybe just being decent people. I would enjoy no religion as I believe it separates man from man. That said, no religion in my view, might bring about anarchy and common mores would go out the window leading to corruption of the human race. Plus, you'd have to start with a fresh population of people but if you could do that, might be interesting!

  • Even without religion, people find beliefs to latch on to. People in power will always use beliefs to gain the trust/fear of the people they rule, and they use those beliefs to fuel their own agendas. The same conditions of control, coercion, oppression, and violence can develop, with religion, or with another kind of belief system. Imperialism of any kind is immoral; much of it is fueled by religious ideology, giving the impression that religion itself is at fault. However, there have been non-religious and even atheistic regimes and empires that were every bit as evil and destructive. Religion is an easy means that people can be swayed by certain ideas to agree to certain things. ("God is on our side" and "They hate our God" etc are common, almost universal, propaganda points that cloud the issues AND get the people riled up enough to allow the leaders of the country to go to war and even commit atrocities.)

  • ... but without religion, leaders who wish total unity and obedience of their people WILL find another kind of belief system to manipulate their people, even if that is simply good old fashioned supernationalism.

  • God is creator, THAT will never happen. God created his this world, and sent his Son to die for us and for us to have a relationship with him. So to say you can take it away because regardless of how many people try to do that, God is still ultimate and in control.. you cant wipe away what he put here.

  • It would be complete chaos, depression, sucide , murder, crime rates would spiral out of control. Don't worry tho, you will get your wish soon enough right after the saints of God are gone.

  • I believe that's just what the U.N. is going to do. it's the major Religions of the world that cause wars and for there to be peace (like a mom taking a toy the kids are fighting over) they will take away all world religions, they have been hailed as mans only hope for peace by many Nations and Churches.
