I have 5 month daughter and I just started giving her rice cereal with her regular formula and noticed that she is extremely constipated 2 days after. I've seen my 5 month trying to strain and push but nothing don't come out. I have stopped giving her the rice cereal after noticing this, and I'm giving her prune juice, but it's been a day and some hours now and she's still constipated. Do anyone have any suggestions of what I should do...

5 Month is Constipated, 5 Month is Extremely Constipated from Rice Cereal.

  • Make the cereal thinner for a while.

  • Feed her some pears of have her drink some pear juice (half juice, half water). Rice cereal really has no nutritional value, you can skip it if it's not working for her and just go to baby food

  • It's common for rice cereal to cause constipation. I would definitely lay off on it... she should start getting regular again soon. If she's been doing ok eating from a spoon you can try stage 1 prunes, they always worked better for me than prune juice. The cereal really isn't necessary at this age, even though it's what docs always recommend to start with. I'd wait until she's getting more fiber sources.

  • OK, you've stopped the cereal, and started the prunes. At this point, I'd wait. If she doesn't go by this time tomorrow, I would let the doctor know, and see what they say.

  • My doc told me that that happens to alot of babies with cereal. It didnt happen with my older daughter, but we just had the same problem with my younger one and the doc said either feed her a little fruit with it or make it alot thinner. We gave her some fruit and not as much cereal and she is ok now.
