  • Read the book yourself first and make up questions for him to answer.

  • I have found the best way too help with reading comprehnsion is to lower the difficulty of the reading just a bit (being able to read it is not the same skill as being able to comprehend- it is not uncommon for a child's reading skill to not be even with their comprehension level at this age.

Have him read the story- do an activity-read the story again-do a different activity- then read the story a final time.
some activity ideas- put on a puppet show, do an activity thee characters did in the story, make a diorama of a scene, make a Story Board (like a 6 panel comic strip).
*answering worksheet type things & writing reporst usuallly doesn't do much, esp for a boy this age, from my experience.

  • I used this method through school and college when a short review was needed.
Who, What, When, Where, How & Why.
He needs to go through and answer all these questions.

  • Some sites I've used in my homeschooling are:

    http://www.infoplease.com/homework/writingskills1.html
    http://www.writinghelp-central.com/book-report.htmn
    http://www.timeforkids.com/TFK/media/hh/pdfs/samplepapers/book_report_sample.pdf
    http://www.lovetolearnplace.com/BookReports/BookReport.html

The last one has some religious references ---- you can just skip over all that if it's not your thing (it's not mine, either).
