With normal natural labor, the contractions start mild and pretty far apart, and your cervix dilates accordingly. With pitocin, which is the most prescribed drug in American, you will pretty much have one continuous contraction without a break. The cervix does not dilate with the contractions. What often happens is that the baby's heart gets into stress, and an emergency c-section is performed. At one hospital I know, there were recently 7 births in a two-hour period, and all seven were sections. This is not normal nor is it a good thing. Women who have been able to deliver their first child naturally fare somewhat better with second babies. It is much, much better to go into labor on your own and let things progress naturally.
