what does exempt payee mean?

i was filling out a tax form (w-9) and there was a box i have to check and it asks me if i am an expemt payee. what does that mean? how do i know if i am or not?

  • It means that you are exempt from paying taxes. Most of us are not exempt.....

  • In order to be an Exempt Payee you have to apply for it on your W-4 Form that you filled out at your place of work. You can go to the IRS web site to see if you qualify to be Exempt.

    You cannot claim exemption from withholding if (a) your income exceeds $950 and includes more than $300 of unearned income (for example, interest and dividends) and (b) another person can claim you as a dependent on their tax return.

    Unless this is on a W-9 Form which goes on about legal resident and alien status. You can look that information up on http://www.irs.gov/instructions/iw9/ar02.html
