How do we get our 1 yr. old to drink milk from a cup?

She'll drink the milk from a bottle in no time at all but we're trying to get rid of the bottles and she refuses to drink the milk from a cup. She'll drink anything else but milk from a cup. We feel like we've tried everything from new cups, flavored milk, warming the milk, drinking it with a straw, to no avail. We're starting to get concerned that she won't get enough calcium in her diet without the milk. We're at a loss and are looking for more suggestions. Thanks in advance!

  • Have you tried the sippy cups as opposed to regular cups?

If so and they have failed, have you tried sippy cups with no handles? That was the problem with my daughter. The handles made her think they were toys. The no handle, soft spout ones worked wonders (the Nuby brand specifically).

Introduce the cup with juice or water in it, and just leave it around, let her get used to it, don't press it on her. After a couple weeks take the bottle away...she'll get the idea.

  • Thanks for the advice. It seems we've tried every cup out there. Handle, no handle, with or w/o straw. She LOVES the Nuby brand with the straw and will drink water/juice out of it no problem but when we fill it with milk she refuses.

  • Let her go without milk for a few days, she won't die, I promise.

The longer you let her have the bottle, the harder it will be to get her to drink milk out of anything else.

  • I agree, when she refuses, don't offer the bottle instead. Stick with the one she likes the best (the straw one). My daughter was the exact same way, but eventually took the milk from the straw sippy. (At 22 months, we're trying to figure out how to get her to drink milk out of a regular cup (again, she'll drink everything else out of a regular cup!). We kept offering it in the same ritualized fashion (milk right before naps, right after waking up, etc,) and she eventually gave in.

  • A child won't starve or dehydrate themselves stick to it and don't let go of it no matter what! EVERYTIME she's thirsty give her a small cup of milk when she refuses don't give her anything else take your time and continue it again over and over.... Eventually she will take it..
