Are any anti-depressants safe to take while nursing?

  • It depends on what you are taking... it should probably say on your bottle too. But call your doctor to be sure.

  • I was on Zoloft at the end of my last pregnancy and during the time I nursed my baby. My baby is healthy and happy so it did not harm him in the womb or through my breastmilk.

  • Zoloft is the antidepressant of choice for nursing moms (very little gets into the milk, and the amount in baby's blood is so small they can't even detect it), Paxil is next. Most SSRIs are safe to take while breastfeeding.
