BFF leaving her air force hubs, what help is available to her & her child?

my best friend is leaving her husband. he is in the air force, stationed in florida. we are all from idaho. so BFF (best friend) is planning to pack up her car with what she can and drive home (36 hours trip spread out over 3 or 4 days) with their 2 year old child.

i've been talking her through their marriage problems for the last 3 years and it's simply not working with them. they're both unhappy, there's lies and cheating all over the place. basically, it's time to get out. they've tried separate and marriage therapy. nothing has helped so far. she's decided to go.

my question is:
what is available to her? there is a huge air force base in her hometown so she'll still be able to do most things there. they are not filing for divorce for awhile.

she'll be living with her parents, getting a job and attempting to do school as well.

is there any assistance available for her? besides for WIC, she's getting on that.

  • Tell her to make sure she has contact info for his command. Make sure her ID card isn't ready to expire. Check DEERS enrollment. If she is near a base she can shop at the commissary, have medical (even if not near a base). As far as government programs though..only things she would qualify for living with him. Those programs see you as married..or not married. If married his income comes into play.

  • Is he willing to help her financially? child support, spousal support, welfare... etc. Every state is different.
