Why do so many people think that unemployment is public assistance and paid out of tax dollars?

  • Well it's paid out of tax dollars, but not the kind of tax dollars everyone assumes. It is a tax on employers that goes into a fund for unemployment. As long as people were laid off, or fired for no just cause I think it's fine. You are allowed only a certain amount, and once that runs out, you'd better have a job, or you're outta luck. It's not like people live off of unemployment their whole lives.

  • I didn't know people thought this lol! Sort of ignortant if you did. Anybody that has worked knows that you pay for your unemployment benifits with your paycheck. So it's really your own earned money

  • Because right now today, it is. Most states have unemployment funds in the negative and are borrowing from the federal government to make up the shortfall. The unemployment money is paid in by the employers, and right now, they have not paid in enough to cover all the people they have laid off. Additionally, a lot of those employers have closed their doors, so they are no longer paying in, despite their former employees still collecting.

  • Because this country is very angry right now. It's kind of scarry how people are turning on one another rather than being sympathetic.

Every employer pays a certain amount of money per employee into a state fund. When you lose your job, if and only if you can prove it was through no fault of your own, you can request unemployment. If you are approved, you collect limited payments, less than your actual pay, for a short period of time. If you are refused, you can contest and go through a hearing to try and convince them to pay you anyway. Unemployment is not guaranteed for anyone, and right now, it's bankrupt in a lot of states.
