How’s the stimulus working out for Caterpillar?

President Obama’s heavily lobbied for the porkulus package at a Caterpillar plant in February. Obama promised that if the stimulus passed, Caterpillar would rehire laid-off workers — a claim that was refuted by Caterpillar’s CEO.
Obama used the company to ram the porkulus package through Congress

  • The only thing we have seen is Sen. McCaskill change from a Pelosi wannabe to an advocate for cutting spending after April 15th. No projects here our city isn't big enough or liberal enough.

  • A large part of caterpillar's business is outside of the US which has declined dramatically. They're also being killed by the strong dollar. I know DH is getting a week of unpaid vacation even though his company is busier than ever because of currency conversion. Caterpillar shouldn't have been used as an example where it depends so much on the global economy, not just the US economy.

  • The strong dollar? Whose strong dollar?

The US has been strong versus the Euro so it's hurting US companies that do a lot of business with Europe.

Caterpillar should never be used as an example. It's been involved in the nastiest 20 year long union war in the history of unions and it will not end until they do outsource every job they have. Cat has been destroying lives and families far longer than this economy has had issues, and there was not a snowball's chance in hell that Obama of all people could even begin to fix it, no matter how much $ he threw at it.
