  • Any single ingredient fruit or vegetable mashed well at first...and later a little thicker.

  • At 5 months you still need it to be pretty thin... try any of the following cooked and then put through your blender with a little water: sweet potato, squash, carrots, apples, peas... You can puree avocado without cooking, and mash a banana with a fork. If you make a big batch of the cooked veggies you can put them in ice cube trays and after they're frozen, transfer to a freezer bag and thaw in the microwave.

  • Solids the first year are more for the experience of eating them, than for nutrition. Wait three or four days before introducing a new food; it can take that long for an allergy to appear. Avoid the primary allergy triggers before baby's first bithday; this is not a complete list, but they include: dairy, wheat, soy, citrus, eggs, strawberries. is a great resouce for feeding babies and toddlers; you should be able to find the book at your local library.
