another constipation question!

My 7 month old has been constipated for a few days. When she does go she has to work really hard for anything to come out, and then it's just a few hard pebbles. She has had some juice (mixed with water) for a couple of days now, but that doesn't seem to be helping. What can I do to help her go? She's been in such a bad mood since she's been constipated.

  • Add a bit more water and juice each day with meals... maybe try a different kind of juice too, some work better than other for some kids. Make sure the juice she is getting is 100% juice also. Pear or prune juice works well.
Limit constipating foods like Rice, applesauce and banana's

  • Try prune juice or apple juice with no water in it. Applesauce as well can help or baby prunes in the baby food isle. Try massage as well. You can always get a laxative or try anal stimulation by rubbing her butt and putting pressure on her rectum. I know it sounds gross and weird but it works. You can also put vasaline on your pinky finger and stick it in her rectum or a rectal thermometer and turn it around is circles until you feel pressure. ONce you feel the pressure stop pushing and just slowly turn it around to stimulate the bowels. If you don't want to do that then do the juices with no water added or a laxative or infant stool softener. Or you can also try a small amount of sea salt in a 4 oz bottle if she will drink it. Its a natural laxative. You only need 1/2 teaspoon if that.

  • Instead of juice just give her some prunes and other fruits and veggies high in fibre. If she's on formula switch to a lower iron one. There are also some infant massage techniques that you can do to help relieve her pain. Waterwheel to I love you techniques are one's I used to releive my DD's gas and constipation.

  • prune baby food or juice. It really helps. Also see what is different in her feedings from now, to before this started. Sometimes certain foods can cause this in babies.

  • Stop the juice! Sugar is bad and constipating for babies. She should start getting used to drinking water (out of a sippy cup, not a bottle). If you have not introduced cooked sweet potatoes, now is a great time.
