  • Personally I wouldn't get either one but if I absolutely had to choose, I'd go with a Golden Retriever any day before a Jack Russel.

  • I guess it depends on your activity level. Jack Russels are very high energy dogs. They're also very smart and need a lot of physical and mental stimulation...otherwise they're prone to neurosis. I knew one Jack Russel who licked (that's right - licked) a hole in the dry wall going after a spot of sun that was coming through the window. I know people who have created entire obstacle courses in their backyards just to keep their Jack Russels stimulated and exercised. Golden Retrievers are also high energy (but not like a Jack Russel) for the first two to three years. Then the settle down into very relaxed family type dogs. If you're not going to be able to provide a lot of exercise, I'd go for the Golden. If you have lots of high energy kids though, the Jack Russel might be more up your ally.

  • I agree with what Angie said about Goldens during the first few years. We have a two and a half year old golden and she is just starting to settle down. She's been driving my crazy for a year, but things are starting to turn around. Whatever dog you get, I suggest either getting a puppy or making sure the dog grew up with kids, my golden is pretty rough with my preschooler.

  • i too would go with the golden retriever
they are bigger and less likely to snap
they wont be as scared by a child as a jack russel would be
but if you have OLDER children like 12 and up
then i would say either or is just fine =]

  • Golden. They are sweet, loyal, eager to please, smart and goofy. I love the breed. Mine was great with my daughter, even as an infant.
