Do you normally have to pay a fee to take a Civil Service exam?

Our city has an opening for Clerk and I know I could do the job. Problem is, they want a $20 non-refundable fee turned in when we turn in the application. Is this normal?

  • They normally go for $15(I'm in NY, so every state can be different!). Study guides go for $50 - $100. Some sites I found with info: federaljobs.net/exam.htm and www.pse-net.com/CivilServiceTest.htm(this ones for sample test). Hope this was helpful and good luck!!!

  • If it is through the City it's OK, not through any other company.

  • It's normal. I've paid $35 for an exam, and I work for the State of NY.

You might be able to take it as a job search expense if you itemize on your taxes though...
