Sour Cream Substitute?

I need help!! I'm trying to bake a coffee cake and the recipe calls for 1 cup of sour cream. I don't have sour cream nor do I have any plain yogurt. I also have no way to get to the store since my husband has the car seat. Any suggestions would be appreciated :)

  • Flavored yogurt would be OK, most likely- I'd use enough from two containers to avoid as much of the fruit and get as much only yogurt as possible, assuming it is yogurt with the fruit on the bottom.

    the following is from this site. it also comments that to use yogurt you should drain it through cheesecloth since it is thinner than sour cream.

    • For baking: 7/8 cup buttermilk or sour milk plus 3 tablespoons butter.
    • For baking: 1 cup yogurt plus 1 teaspoon baking soda.
    • For baking: 3/4 cup sour milk plus 1/3 cup butter.
    • For baking: 3/4 cup buttermilk plus 1/3 cup butter.

  • Can you use milk? Maybe just cut down the quantity though??

  • (To sour milk, put 1 tablespoon vinegar or lemon juice in a cup measure and fill to 1 cup with sweet milk.)
