Was Jesus against ALL public prayer?

Jesus did practice some level of public prayer: "Then little children were brought to Jesus for him to place his hands on them and pray for them. But the disciples rebuked those who brought them. Jesus said, "Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of heaven belongs to such as these." When he had placed his hands on them, he went on from there." [Matthew 19:13-15] It was Jesus's disciples that didn't want public prayer for some reason-- taking too long, they thought audience wouldn't be receptive, or any other reason-- but Jesus took the time to pray for kids.

  • In a way you answered your own question: Jesus was never against public prayer! His deciples felt that children were beneath Jesus and thus turned them away, but Jesus said "let them come to me". This took place durring the sermon on the mount(matt chap 5-7.The deciples thought before that, that children were not intelligent enough to question Jesus. Jesus never turned ANYBODY away!!! Not even the whores of the biblical days! He had compassion and understanding for EVERYONE reguardless of age, backround, financial stance, and race, He even talked to non believers and those with different beliefs!!!

  • Exactly as Ladyd said. Jesus was not against public prayer. He was against those "praying in public just so that they could be seen" because they were just being hypocrites. They weren't praying to be good, they were praying to "show off". But otherwise, yes, Jesus was open to pray for ANYONE who was willing to accept what he was offering - especially the children.

  • No, it was the way some men prayed in public, So people would hear their pretty words and give the men glory in how they spoke, our Watchtower Study this last month has been on Jesus Sermon on the Mount and last Sunday was about that very topic.
