  • It depends on how much you weigh and how active you are. I'm sure there are online calculators that could help figure it out.

  • You should eat less calories than you burn. More importantly, you need to live a healthy life; this includes setting a great example for your kids. Start slow, take a walk around the block. Add another block every couple of days. Start increasing your speed. Walk for at least 20 minutes at least 3 times a week.
Drink water; at least 8 8oz glasses a day. Eat fruits and vegetables, 7-8 servings a day in at least 3 colors. As you use them up, replace your "white foods" like rice, bread and pasta, with whole grain, like brown rice, quinoa, whole grain bread, corn tortillas, whole wheat pasta. Work your way up to 7 servings of whole grains a day. Eat beans and lentils. Go to the library and look for The China Study by T. Colin Campbell or anything by Dr. McDougall. Dr. McDougall has free meal plans and recipes on his website: http://www.drmcdougall.com/free.html

  • The average woman would lose weight at 1500 calories. For some, esp. if your weight is extreme, 1800 would do it, then eventually you could go to 1500. The problem with going lower is that the body would believe it is in famine and begin to hold onto fat in order to survive, so you never want to go below 1500 in order to remain healthy.

Being healthy is the most important.

  • The best diet that is the most effective and balancing and all encompassing is the Zone by Dr. Barry Sears. It doesn't focus on calories but on the right ratio of proteins, carbs and fats and discusses good and bad fats. If you do it correctly you will be eating the right amount of calories, but better than that you will be giving your body exactly what it needs and evening out your hormones. If you just start eliminating calories, or counting them, you will most likely be leaving things out and feeling really hungry, and you will be irritable and moody.

  • I'll tell it to you how my dr. told it to me: "MEATS FRUITS AND VEGGIES ONLY!!! NOTHING ELSE!" lol, i have incorporated a few healthy carbs like whole oats (oatmeal) and "Fiber one plus" bars (YUMMY SNACKS) into my plan. If you are 5'9" I would recommend around 1400 calories. I know that sounds VERY LOW AND UNHEALTHY, BUT most people when they are counting calories, usually miss little calories hereh and there and eat more than they realize. Or they are stilll hungry by 10pm. If you focus on 1400 calories, then you will probably wind up eating around 1600 maybe 1700, and you will do just fine :)
