Wheel and axle simple machine material ideas

Confusing title? Sorry! My son, 7, is making a simple machine for class due on the 18th. He has decided to make a wheel and axle. We are thinking we could do a paper towel or toilet paper tube axle, but don't have any ideas for the wheels. Or we could do CD wheels, but don't have any idea for the axle. The plan is to then use a small piece of cardboard as a platform to rest on the axle and use a piece of string to tie to the axle. We are going to use a piece of candy as the object we are moving (this is where the platform comes in) and the machine has to be able to move the object. In theory, we pull on the string, the machine moves the candy across the floor......again, in theory. Thanks for any ideas you might have.

  • On the paper tube, try a bagel or raised doughnut. (You may need to widen the hole.)
On the CD, try a pencil. (The fat ones toddlers preschoolers use.)
