What happened to the other tablet?

When Moses came down from the mountain, he was carrying two tablets. And when he got back home, he was so mad at what was happening he threw the one and it smashed. Or, that's what i was taught anyway.
So, what happened to all the things written on that tablet? It just makes me wonder what was really there. Anybody else think about this?

  • He came down the mountain, was mad that the Isrealites were worshipping a golden cafe so he broke the tablets. It was then grounded up and put in water and the people had to drink it. Moses went back up the mountain and got new tablets.

  • I thought he smashed both and had to go back up and this time he wrote them down. I need to go check : )

You mean that you think Moses broke what God wrote and then he changed it?

  • My theory is that it was a higher law, similar to what Christ taught.

Moses came down, saw that his people weren't ready for it, and went back up and got a easier set of laws for them to follow.

Just a theory, but it seems to fit.

  • The 10 commandments were written on the tablets both times. He just went up and got a new copy.

  • Good question OP!

Why would he break a set of laws that god gave him just to go back and get the same set?
And why wasn't he punished for breaking the first set?

    Nice ponderings!!

  • They were the same. God just wrote the same ones out again and did not change a thing.

    Good try though :-)

  • Ditto what others said... he had to go back up the mountain and receive them again. Same Ten both times.

  • O.K. I looked it up. Often what we are taught is incorrect with what the Bible actually says. These stories get familier and we leave stuff out or say it wrong.

The first two tablets were smashed not just one. That is in Exodus 32:19-35. That passage also talks about the golden calf. That is what was ground to powder and the Irealites drank. It also talks about God cursing them for their idol worship.

Chapter 33 deals with the curse more and other things that happend between the smashing of the tablets and recieving the second.

In chapter 34 verses 1-4, God tells Moses to make two new tablets and bring them back. Between verse 4 and verse 29 is a reciting of the laws. Verse 29 talks about the people's reaction to Moses when he brought the tablet back down.

    Hope that helps.

  • And please note that god obviously forgot what he had said in the first set of commandments (Exodus 20) since the second set (Exodus 34) were different from the first in every single way, save for the first one about having no other gods. No prohibitions against murder, adultery, stealing or lying. But boil a baby goat in his mother's milk and you're in BIG trouble, mister!!!

  • witchqueen:

Where are you getting that from? As far as I know, they were exactly the same ten on both tablets . . .
