First period after the baby...

I was told that when you breastfeed, you dont get your period for a long time after giveing birth, but I'm ony 5 weeks out, and I'm having heavy bleeding. What gives?

  • breastfeeding is no guarantee that your period will not come back soon. It all depends on your body and your hormones.

  • At 5 weeks it is most likely still post partum bleeding. MOST women do not have their period/fertility return until about 6 months or later, but there are always exceptions. It also depends on things like whether you give baby a pacifier, nurse on demand, cosleep (easier acces to nursing at night), work and pump etc. For me Af didn't return until about 15 months with both and my 23 month old is still nursing.

  • Each person is totally different. I myself did not flow at all while I breast fed my 3 children. On the other hand my daughter started flowing again after 3 months and she is breast feeding also.
