How do you cite a text message?

Say if you were writing a story and you were sending someone a text, would you cite it like a normal phrase that is spoken?

For example in the story you wrote I sent him a text message saying "whats up?" is that how you would cite it?

and in the response would you say "not much" he texted back.

Does that look right?
