At how many weeks is it safe to go in labor?Or the lungs strong enough?

How many weeks can it be safe if you go in to labor? If you deliver at 37 weeks. Is that enough time for the lungs to mature for breathing on her own? They are trying to hold me off.But she wants to come but not dilating.Any ideas? Thanks sooo much for all the awesome advice.

  • 37 weeks is good. the lungs are mature and developed at 36 weeks. however, babies born at 40 weeks could still have under developed lungs. it just depends on baby. if your baby is ready to come out and meet mommy and daddy, there isn't much they can do to stop it. They can give you Magnesium to hold off labor but that can only work for so long. If you don't want them holding off labor then you have the right to say no. and your baby may not have a problem breathing on her own if she is born today but then again she may. you won't know until she is born. let me tell you this piece of info
a baby born at 30 weeks has a 90% chance of survival
a baby born at 28 weeks has a 20% chance of survival
you are 37 weeks so i believe your chances are good.
good luck and congrats on your upcoming arrival

  • She should be fine :) Most women are considered full term at 37 weeks.

  • I had to have a c-section and the doctor told me that he does not like to do c-sections till 39.5 weeks because even at 39 weeks, some of the 39 weekers have problems with breathing.

  • i had my daughter and son at 38 weeks and they were both fine i have a friend that just had her baby at 37 weeks and he weighed almost 8 pounds so it depends on the baby.

  • You are having signs of labor? You are even dilating and yet you say she wants to come? How do you know this? EDD can be off by 2 weeks and so you could end up with an infant with lungs that aren't fully developed, and then again, she could be fine. But if you arent really going into labor and it isnt medically neccessary for you to deliver now, then you should wait as long as you can for labor to start on it's own.
