How do you identify yourself?

The other day in Walmart a little girl points at my 5-year-old son's mohawk and exclaims "EWW mommy look at that white boys hair!" To which my son responds "That Brown girl wasn't very nice mommy." Which prompts the mother to call me a "racist *itch".

Frankly my son knows his colors far better than his history and geography and he has always described people as either "white" or "brown".

This has left me do you identify yourself? I've always considered myself "white" although I'm 2/3 Native American. I've never been to Caucasia, I think it's an absurd title. I have friends who find "black" offensive other friends who think "African American" sounds rediculous as their known relatives are as American as I am.
So what are you?

  • I am black and puer to rican & consider myself to be of both races, im stared at most times because i speak spanish(thick brooklyn acentor rosie perez im told) but look @ me you see i look more african american then I do puerto rican,Btw if ya ever go to P.R. then you'd say I look like them. ppl ask my kids what are they n I've taught my kids to be proud of their mixed races as well since their black puerto rican & navajo, theyre lighter than me but darker than their dadr & beautiful.Yup they know it, but I also teach my kids that the world's a better palce4 its diversitys,& 2not think that they are better than anyone & no ones better than them.I remember this black lady asked me how my weave was done,I was confused like what? i had 2explain 2her that my hair was like its cuz of my blck momma yet i am mixed. she didnt belive me til i showed her my roots,so u c its how you educate ppl. be proud of ur race.Teach em is all!

  • Hi, I'm Robyn. Most people call me mixed, mulatto, African American, or mistake me as some type of Hispanic decent, but I prefer Robyn.

  • kids are kids. The other mom was totally out of line. Add to that she used profanity in front of her child and yours? IMO, shows her lacking in areas such as respect, decency, and articulation. Perhaps she needs to stop and look at herself before she judges others.

  • I'm just white. In actuality my ancestry is just about half Irish-American and half American Indian (Chocktaw) but I LOOK totally white, so that's how I self-identify.
