First Time Tutoring Help

this will be my first time tutoring, i am tutoring a child who is in the first grade but his literacy and math skills are at a pre k level. how do i break up my hour session and how should i start our first meeting

  • First, the parents tell you where he needs to be. Then you need to assess his skill level. Maybe start with him identifying letters, colors and numbers. An hour is a very long time; he will definitely need a break.
    Are you working with the school's curriculum or your own?
    Be sure to give him homework to reinforce what the two of you worked on.

  • You need to start with a full assessment of his phonics and math skills. You should plan activities to match his skill deficits. During the first meeting I would focus on building rapport so he's comfortable.  Maybe you could look through books together so he could tell you what he's interested in.
