Obama fights to keep Vouchers OUT of DC public Schools over the long term, But then....

he and Democrats are OK with spending $500M Teaching 'Environmental Literacy' Starting in Kindergarten?

I guess it's a drop in the eco-friendly "green" bucket compared to motivated under privileged students getting a quality education and bettering their future?

What happened to ensuring ALL students receive the core fundamental teachings of reading, writing, and arithmetic to compete in a global world. (you know the core subjects US kids are FAILING)????

  • My stance on schools in D.C. is that every politician who lives there during the schoolyear with kids, should be forced to have their kids in public school only. No private schools of any kind should be allowed in any driving distance from D.C.
Those wives can home school or stay in their state with the kids.
D.C. should be ashamed of themselves to have so many wealthy and the school system to be what it is, hypocrisy at it's finest, when elected public officials send their kids to private schools.

  • The kids in DC only need to read well enough to screw in a compact fluorescence light bulb, I guess.

Obama and Dems in DC are high believers in the Do as we (and our kids say), but NOT as we do (and please keep it away from our  private schools).  Truly Sad.

  • What I find so incredibly "noble" is that several of the children who attend the posh private school that Obama's daughters are privileged to attend, are there because of vouchers. And that's right, you guessed it, BACK to the DC public school system for you!!!

"And President Obama, who has no choice but to live in the White House, does not send his two daughters to D.C. public schools, either. They attend a private school, Sidwell Friends, along with two students who got there because of the voucher program."

  • Vouchers are not an effective way to improve the school system. They still contribute to the poor quality of public schools, instead of improving them. The 500m is only tangentally related, and is absolutely not comparable, money-wise, to a voucher system, and also is going to public schools, after all. So it is an apple and oranges comparison. If you disagree with the environmental teachings, it would be more effective to just say it should go to math or reading programs than complain about vouchers. Where the Obamas send their children is not really your business, IMO.

  • You know what stacy in the big picture of $$$$$ money going to public schools. It is a slap in the face, imo, to kids in DC who will NOT have an opportunity to the education they deserve. Why? Well, imo it is because the Democrats are in Bed with the Teachers Union.

  • Ohh, and I am not against env. teachings. But how about we GET SOMETHING RIGHT. How about we, as a nation, are able to COMPETE in the Global Academia. How about we fix what is already BROKE before we go adding more to the curriculum? We cannot successfully do that till the union and the administrators put their greedy selfish hats in timeout, and start working for the KIDS!

  • IMO- Poor children should NOT be ROBBED of an education in the name of improving a public school system that is broken beyond belief and will take years to fix. Obama loves those unions, God bless him. Why should a child be denied a decent education simply to buy a few more votes?

As far as "environmental literacy" goes, it's a crock of s***. The theory in itself is flawed- go buy a hybrid when you've got a car that works fine. (That's great for the earth. Spike in production, parts being flown all over God's green earth, etc, and get rid of the other car. Eat until you're obese as long as it's "eco friendly" food. Never mind the fifty drugs you'll need to be on to counteract your body fat, and all the production your excess consumption caused, and the fact that there a billion kids who are starving while you eat six servings of free range bison, and fair trade chocolate that got flown 4000 miles to get to you.

  • oh, and let's not forget those energy saving light bulbs that are killing the people producing them in China. I guess less people alive are less people to do damage to the earth. Probably why you see so many environmentally aware bumper stickers next to pro choice stickers on Priuses.

The only choice the left wants left is the one to kill the unborn.

What they need to teach in schools is math, english, reading, and common sense, not "environmental literacy." I can see it now, the course will be littered with advertising for GE and its subsidiaries.
