Does dried food go off ? Would you use beans and lentils that were well passed there expiry date. ?

I came across a batch of dried beans and lentils in the kitchen that were long forgotten and well passed their expiry date. i'm torn between using them because they look perfectly alright, and throwing them seems such a waste, but then again i'm thinking well perhaps thats not the best of ideas and just ditch them. What would you do ? Does dried food really go off ?

  • I would throw them away. I don't use anything past date it has a date on it for a reason. They don't just put it on there for no reason.

  • The expiration date is not a hard, fast line. The beans and lentils should be good for at least 2 months past the date. Bad beans smell rancid (you may want to start keeping them in the freezer; they last much longer).

  • rancid beans now that sounds tastey. NOT!. they are dry beans.. i don't think they are bad. try putting them to cook and see. If Allah wills, you'll find them delicious.
