Anyone with an inground pool?

This is our first summer season in our new home with an i/g pool and we're having the biggest problem ever - birds pooping in and around the pool. There is a pool fence up and they come and perch on the fence and poop all on the cement that we have to walk on with our bare feet. It is so disgusting. Then the poop gets in the pool and sinks to the bottom so everyday its like a chore to clean their mess up before we can even go by the pool.

Any suggestions?

  • We put fake, colorful, realistic looking snakes around our pool..evenly spaced. No more bird problems. Every other day we move the fake snakes around. Doesn't work overnight, but eventually they won't go near the pool.

  • The previous owners left us a couple but they don't work, maybe because they are faded. I'll buy some new ones and see what happens.

  • You COULD set up a "bird area" AWAY from your pool with bird bath(s) and bird feeder(s)...since birds are attracted to water. Since we established such an area, we haven't had any trouble with birds messing up the pool and patio areas.

Also you should keep your filter running 24/7--on a low speed/rate when you're not using it and on high when you are to help skim off all kinds of debris...body oils, sunscreen bird droppings, leaves, pollen, etc.

Keep your sanitizing agents (we use Baquacil--which is not corrosive like chlorine, and more effective) at their proper levels--a little higher when using the pool for extended periods or if you have additional guests.

Backwash the filter frequently, and skim and brush the bottom to prevent scum lines and algae build up!

There's A LOT of routine maintenance when you have a pool, but if you stay on top of it--it's WORTH it!!! We'll be diving into ours this afternoon! WOO HOO!! :o)
