Breastfeeders...did you baby ever suffer from constipation?

I see all of these post about FF babies being constipated. I have never heard of a BF baby be constipated. So were your BF babies ever constipated?

  • They say it is almost impossible for a breastfed baby to be constipated. I thought my dd had this same problem, but they can go 7-10 days without a BM becase there is very little waste in breastmilk, but when they do go again, THEY GO! lol. I have reassured this with my dr and on here =) my dd goes about once a week and as long as they are gaining addequate weight, it is just fine! don't worry mama!!

  • All babies get constipated from time to time. FF or BF either way it will happen. My daughter is FF and has never been constipated to this point and she is 8 months old. My niece was BF and was constipated at least once a month.

  • None of the three of my babies was ever constipated, so you can't say all babies.

I mean constipated where they can't poop and when they finally do it is a hard stool that hurts.

  • No my BF son has never been constipated. He did go long periods between poops, but his poops were never hard or painful.

  • Nope only when I supplemented with formula. A lot of people think their BF'd babies are constipated because they don't poop for days but they don't realize that is normal. BF'd babies can become constipated if mom eats certain foods, or once they are on solids but it is less likely because formula has a ton more iron than babies need

  • My daughter is 13 (years, not months); breastfed for 23 months; eats a mostly vegetarian diet with lots of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Drinks lots of water; has never had a glass of milk. She has never been constipated.

  • My bf'd boys were never constipated until we were switching over to whole milk, but my 6 week old niece has been constipated. Glycerine suppositories worked great for both of them.

  • None of my 4 children (all breastfed) have ever been constipated. My 8 year old has never been, my 6 year old has never been, my 4 year old has never been and my 18 month old has never been.

  • Also, you know they are constipated if their stools are pellet-like/hard. If they strain or are in pain, it is most likely constipation. If they go and it is normal(soft and possibly slightly runny) then they aren't/weren't constipated. Just normal!!
