Solid poo?

My son will be 5 months in a week. His past 3 diapers has had a more solid consistency almost like a solid poo, but not hard like he is constipated. Is this normal? He eats rice apple cereal, stage one jar foods and is formula fed. I'm not overly concerned but I am wondering if it is normal for him to start having solid stools now?

  • You started solids really early. the rice can be constipating. Remember that until babies turn 1 they are eating solids for the experience of eating them; nutrition continues to come from breastmilk or formula. For his next couple of new food, try avocado and baked sweet potato.

  • I would stop giving him's just empty calories and it's VERY constipating....he's still a little young for all of the solilds but to answer your question, the solids is why.

  • Yes it is normal for their poop to have a more solid ocnsistency when you start solids. It will firm up even more when you start table foods. As you run through more foods for him it will even change colors! lol (the orange from carrots and squash is freaky!! rofl)

Just keep an eye on it and if it seems to be getting "too firm" cut back a bit on the cereal, that's all. Based on what you've written you started solids well within the recommended time
frame of 4-6 months for beginning solids.
