# A rope ladder hangs over the side of a ship. The rungs are one foot apart and the ladder is 12 feet long. The tide is rising at four inches an hour. How long will it take before the first four rungs of the ladder are underwater?

• The boat will rise with the tide, so there is no difference in the relationship of the ladder to the water level

• Are you trying to do your homework?

• Who cares, once I got out of school, I tried to forget this kind of crap! "Two trains are travelling toward each other at whatever speeds, when do they crash into each other and kill everybody aboard?" "Water is running into the bathtub at some rate, and out of a hole at some other rate, how soon can the plumber get it fixed?" ARRRRGH!
