When do I start potty training?

I'm a first time mom so this is all new to me. My daughter is still too young right now, but I read somewhere that as early as 12 mo. old, you should start potty training. My cousin has a 5 year old still in diapers (YIKES!). I don't want that to be my kid. Help!

  • You'll know when you're child is ready. Most children don't even start showing signs of it until after their 2nd birthdays. I don't know you're cousin situation but thats not normal. As long as you're paying attention to the signs and guiding your child to do so, you won't have too much trouble... well maybe some trouble lol but you won't have a child in diapers at 5 unless there is some kind of problem which would need a physicans attention.

  • my little girl was 1 when I started to potty train. When I would change her diaper I would tell her that it was nasty and how cum she didn't go to the potty. She likes Dora the Explorer so I would ask her if Dora would use a diaper or go to the potty and she would tell me that Dora was a big girl and would go to the potty. So I started encouraging her to go to the the potty like Dora. I even went and bought her a Dora potty. She would go and sit down on her own and even if she didn't do anything I would tell her YOU DID IT! and would tell her she was a big girl. I mean yea she would have her accedents every now and then. Now she's three and gots it down except at night

  • My son started a 2 years he was almost completely potty trained then I had my daughter. Potty training went out the door. He just now is going in the big boy potty. Time will tell. You will be ale to feel it out when her time is. Parents want to rush it. She will tell you when it is time.

  • My mom had my sisters and I all potty trained by the time we were 18mo. She introduced the potty and would sit us on it every couple of hours like clockwork. We didn't eat or drink anything within 2 hours of bed time. She would put us down to sleep and then wake us up to go before she left to work (she worked graveyard shift). When our dad got up in the middle of the night he would take us as well. It's all about consistency.

My son has been using the potty since he was about a 15mo. He's pretty good about letting me know when he needs to go during the day. I'm following the same sort of system that my mom used with us.
