MJ and BF? (also posted in babies)

I did research online to see what the risks were and all the info i found that said it was bad, i found just as much info that contradicted all the info that said it was bad. im more paranoid of dr.s testing her and taking her away becuase it's illegal but im also in Ca where its legal for medical patients...my question is, on a doctors level, do any of you have and evidence that shows its bad or ok to smoke while breast feeding? and to the ones that are going to bash and say it's bad all around, just keep your comments to yourself. thanks

  • Well the nicotine or whatever your smoking gets in the childs system as well and can cause horrible withdraw symptoms later on in life when your no longer breastfeeding. I have seen it first hand and its horrible to watch. Smoking is bad in itself but to force your child to suck it in by smelling it and being around it or having to suck the nicotine out of your milk is wrong.

  • Most medical advice does not account for the risk of formula. It's difficult to assess because controlled studies would be unethical (i.e. telling a mom TO smoke). Breastfeeding sites do account for the risk of formula, and they seem to think breastfeeding with smoking is better. However. Cigarettes and marijuana are very different. I wonder, if you are taking it for a medical issue, if many of the issues could be sidestepped by ingesting it, not smoking. If you do smoke, you shouldn't cosleep.

Of course, I don't think you should smoke it with a baby at all. If you are truly using it for a medical reason, talk with your prescribing doctor.

  • Your pregnant, stop smoking! There is no medical issue bad enough that a person can't go without pot for a lousy nine months. As for regular cigarettes, seriously grow the hell up. You are a parent now, it is no longer about you. You really want your baby up on your body while you smell like a freakin ash tray, yeah real nice. Blech
