Do you think that a mother who fakes an abduction has a "mental disorder"?

"A Pennsylvania woman who vanished after calling 911 to say she had been abducted and stuffed in the trunk of a car along with her young daughter apparently faked the abduction, booked a flight to Orlando, where she checked into a hotel under an alias and then took her daughter to visit a Disney theme park, law enforcement sources told ABC News. Highlights from the link:

Sweeten made at least two 911 calls...saying she was locked in the trunk of a dark-colored 1990s Cadillac.

Sweeten had withdrawn about $12,000 from several bank accounts...investigating whether that money had been stolen.

Sweeten allegedly was involved in stealing about $300,000 from her former employer [and] is listed as the director of The Carlitz Foundation...a Pennsylvania-based charity...[that] raises money for autism research and people in Burma.

  • I have no idea, more information would be required to make a mental health assessment. She could just be very manipulative, and that isn't grounds for insanity.

  • We should wait for the development of this story. We don't know the reasons that push the mom to do it. She works at a firm. I don't think she is insane.

  • attention needs. clearly she was seeking attention and longing for a feeling of being so important to have everyone worry about her.

she should be charged with something and mentally evaluated. kids should stay with family until she is stable in professional care.

  • I'd say...most likely. Maybe something she hasn't come forward with yet? We as mothers are expected to be so "perfect" all the time, and a lot of mental disorders are never discovered until something goes horribly wrong.
