  • If your baby ends up pooping then don't fix what isnt broken. Your baby is still regulating its bowels and 'speeding it up' can do more harm than good. Formula fed babies can go a couple days without pooping and breast fed can go a couple weeks!

Do not give karo syurp. The makers of karo syrup issued a statement that it carries a risk of botulism (just like honey) because it is not a sterile product. It is also not a wise practice to give infants anything other than breast milk or formula until 6 months of age, that means no juices too.

  • i wouldn't worry yet. my dr told me to add more water than formula, but just wait it out. and ive also been told to not give babies anything other than formula/breast milk. They can't digest it.

  • they aren't constipated just because they haven't gone. as someone mentioned they can go a long time without pooing. the important part is the texture. if it's like peanut butter he's constipated.

  • to answer the questions...... my doc told me to give the apple juice. and yes its like peanut butter and thats if i give apple juice, otherwise its like rocks and has made him bleed.. the only reason i try to speed it up is cause he acts like hes in pain. and as for adding more water... how much? cause the cans say to make sure we do it like it says, no more, no less......

  • If its like peanut butter that is NOT constipation. Constipation is like rabbit pellets. If baby is have rabbit pellets you probably need to switch formulas. Do not add more water to the formula, babies have died from that. Formula has a certain amount of calories per ounce, adding more water gives it less calories per ounce. This 2% formula, or skim. Iron is usually the culprit behind constipation so you could try a low iron version, or lactose free kind. I would avoid soy though, it causes many problems (usually the problems come up in adult life).

  • i really dont want to switch formulas again!.... this is his 4th kind. hes on enfamil a.r. for spit up, but it is constipating him. it was like the hard rabbit pellets, and very hard, made him bleed once, which is when the doc recommended apple juice. today was the first time it was like peanut butter, but he tried alllll day to poop and was very un happy cause of his uncompfortableness.

  • Yeah the AR has rice starch in it and isnt supposed to be for infants under 4 months old!! Thats why hes constipated. Switch to gentilease and as long as hes gaining weight then the spitup is ok. He'll stop that around 5-6 months.

  • there again the doc is who told me to get on A.R. some babies have to be on it. they dont have ot be 4 months old. its for babies who spit up a lot or have reflux. he was very unhappy, because he was always hungry due to everything coming up right after going in. he was on the gentle ease to try and relieve the fussi ness and spit up but then had to go to the ar to stop the throwing it all up. im not sure what else to do.

  • The dark Karo worked better for us, and we used it from 5 weeks because she was having bleeding, and we didn't want her to get hemorroids. Our doctor recommended the Karo. Check with your doctor or call-a-nurse. I think we did 1/4 teaspoon in 2 oz of water. We eventually did it every morning until she was older, and could handle the pushing better
BTW, the article that says you shouldn't give corn syrup to infants because the company can't "guarantee" there aren't spores....the next sentence states that "there have never been any cases of infant botulism directly related to corn syrup."

    Here it is:

  • I'd pull him off of the AR and try Nutramigen, it's a hypoallergenic formula. Allergies to dairy can cause babies to have reflux and constipation. I'd also demand an antacid. DD had both reflux and allergies and it was a night mare until it was all straightened out.
