My daughters first grade teacher didn't tell us anything more except we know it's subtraction.

• Doubles is adding 5and 5 and getting 10 as the answer.
any number to itself for the answer

doubles minus one is adding the number 5 plus 5 and take away 1 equals 9 for the problem 5 plus 4

This is done one all numbers . the number plus itself minus 1 to find the answer.
I just did this with my grandson.
They keep changing the way Math is done. Why don't they just teach them to add. the numbers?

• PP is correct. Doubles is adding that same number to itself:

1+1, 2+2, 3+3, etc.

Doubles minus one is adding a number to the number one less than it:

2+1, 3+2, 4+3, etc.

They keep changing the math is taught because research shows children learn more using new techniques.  Not all kids learn their facts best using this method, but it does help many.
