physical therapy for toe walking/abnormal gait when running

My 8 year old son walks on his toes. He started physical therapy last week and she said his calf muscles were really tight. Probably started as a habit when he was young and the tendons and muscles just tightened up from being in that form. It effects his running. He plays baseball and is very slow runner, like he isn't getting full range of motion in his legs. He is otherwise very healthy. Has anyone been through this? Did it help? His ped said we would try the therapy, and if there was no improvement he would refer us to a neurologist just to make sure there was nothing else going on.
