  • Summer Day Camp; is the answer. If money is a problem; band together with other parents and make plans for pools, zoos, museums, playgrounds, (get a list of things to do from do crafts and don't forget about learning time. Also check your local library for reading programs. Let them read at lease an hour a day and talk about what they've read. Do a few math problems, Keep in mind softball but most camps or basketball, whatever they are most interested in. But most important have tons of fun!

  • We are in Chicago, and there are tons of free and really cheap things to do; many of which will certainly translate to New York:
Take a picnic lunch to a park; there are hundreds of them; many have big sprinklers for the kids to run through.
Museums (you can bring lunch there, too)! Look for a published list of free days; check out a pass from the public library
Farmers Markets or Green Markets; there is probably one everyday.
    Neighborhood festivals
    Ethnic festivals
    Go walk through Chinatown
One of my favorite things to do is take the Staten Island Ferry; it is really cheap, and (I don't know if it's still there) there is a great calzone stand on the Manhattan side.

  • Library - there are typically lots of free programs at the library during the summer. Some would even be appropriate for your 2 year old

Check out They offer free swim lessons at a variety of places around NYC

Bank of America has a free "museums on us" program that offers free admission to select museums the first Saturday of the month. There may be something in your area.

check out for NYC - there's always a calendar of event - some are free, some are not

  • Central Park (bring stuff to play with in Sheep's Meadow and on the Big Green, walk around the Reservoir, take them to the "water play areas", the Alice in Wonderland Statue thing, etc., watch performances by the "street performers")
Visit FAO Schwartz and the Times Square Toys R US
    Rides on the subway!
    Walk across the big bridges
Take them to a movie or two
