Michael Jackson "Black & White" song. What the lyrics of this song mean to you?

The song is from the 90s and I'm trying to figure out the meaning of the song. Any opinions! Thanks

  • I think he is saying it is more about where you come from, pride in your neighborhood versus actual racial pride. Like a kid "from the other side of the tracks". A social outcast in stature not race.

Think of Boston - gangs of Irish versus Italian. A constant Turf war, but he's going to walk with his girl no matter what, even if he's from the outside.

  • no matter what the situation , or no matter whats going on -- ur race doesnt matter

  • Well....could be that you're trying to read too much into it, OP. The lyrics are pretty darn simple--he doesn't care about race and wishes other people wouldn't either. He mentions something about the white sheets (not intimidating him) which presumably is a reference to the Klan, with whom I'm quite certain MJ has never had any contact with, but whatever.

By the way, does anyone else find it ironic that Michael Jackson wrote this song while in the process of turning himself into a white dude?

  • Race is nothing to fear. And there is no reason why race should be a factor in deciding if someone if worth your time.

  • Michael Jackson has a malady called vitiligo. It's a medical condition where his body develops anti-bodies against his own body pigment, and this results in light patches over the skin. Michael Jackson now has passed the point of patches and now his skin has turned colorless; all pigmentation is lost. The effects cannot be reversed. Micheal's grandfather had this condition, and it is unfortunate that it was passed down to Michael. Sadly, this condition is not rare.

He did not turn himself white......

  • That twenty years later, he's still having an identity crisis ;D.

No seriously, don't make too much of it. Loved the song in the 90s video creeped me out with all the morphing at the end. It's just that you shouldn't care about race- and he doesn't either.

I really didn't care about what his feelings were about race when he was dangling his baby out the window. That man's got some problems.

  • I agree he has more issues than one can keep up with but then again to grow up in live he lead as a child before success, a child pop star, a young man and dealing with a wacked out family I'm not surprised he's a little off his rocker these days.

Oh and the songs meaning has just as much relevance now than it did back then. Race shouldn't even be on the chopping block when one is talking about developing any kind of relationship with another human being.
