How do I apply for section 8 housing?

I am desperate. I live under bad conditions in a place where we can not look forward and with the way things are going could be homeless at any moment. How can I apply for section 8? What do I need to qualify? How does section 8 work?

They do ask for a lot of information. Your income, possibly your tax return, kids social security cards, your birth certificate, social security card and current ID...The form is really long but worth it! OH and you can't have any crimminal record or even crimminal charges in the past 3 years or you will be immidetly denied that's the new rule.
If you are approved they tell you the amount you get, then you call and find an apartment that is section 8 approved. They never pay the full amount so you are responsible for usually 35% of the rent. (There are programs to help with moving expenses and rent+deposit, just ask them when you go to fill out the forms.) It goes by your income though so you never know. By the way a lot of times it takes months because most cities have long waiting lists so do it ASAP.
    Hope this helps!

  • Someone I know tried to get section 8 housing and was told that there was a waiting list, years long and they closed the list...(this was in California). If you are about to be homeless, please look into other options!

  • look in your local phone book and call. Our's is listed under County Govt. See how long the waiting list is. Last year there was no list in our county. Now the list is very long. Homeless gets sent to the top of the list, at least they do in our community.

  • I have never had to use section 8 but I have heard that there are waiting list, like the person above said. What state do you live in? I know here in Lincoln, NE there is a housing authority that provides cheap housing. Maybe your city does the same.
