Does anyone have any suggestions for getting an 11 week old to nap?

My son is 11 weeks old. Up until a week or two ago he would nap periodically through the day and then we would bathe him about 9, feed him and put him to bed by 10. Then he essentially stopped napping. Not even a short nap in the swing or bouncy seat and by 6 pm he is beside himself. He is starving but won't eat and so overtired he won't allow himself to sleep. This results in him just screaming and screaming. Any napping suggestions so we can help our son ease into bedtime more easily?

  • Try to get some type of routine started. When they are that little it's so hard to get them on a schedule, but it can be done, just takes some time and patience. Does he have a special blanket that he likes? I would just sit and rock him with his special blanket and his binky and when he starts to nod off for a lil snooze place him in his crib to nap. He may fuss a bit at first, but hopefully getting him a little sleepy will get things headed in the direction you are hoping for. Sometimes getting them some fresh air can help too, going for a little walk late in the morning or even just sitting outside for a while. Fresh air always seems to wear them out a little bit more.
    Best of luck to you!!

  • Sounds like you may be having some issues with colic. There is Harvey Karp's 5 S's, which are Swaddle, Swing, Suck, Shoosh (making that SHHHHH sound over and over again), and can't remember the 5th. Worth looking into though!! Also, I've heard that some babies just want to be held alot during this time, so if you have a sling or front carrier, now's the time to use it, while doing things around the house, even while he's sleeping. If your baby is consistantly not eating, you should definately talk to your Doctor, to make sure he doesn't become malnourished!
    HTH!!! Good Luck!

  • My 12 week old still falls asleep when we swaddle her up, sometimes with a pacifier. Works for us!

  • We swaddled our son until he was 9! months. Its the only way he would sleep, and one day he just flipped over while swaddled, and we were like, ok, guess you are ready! But we used to HAVE to swaddle him to sleep. Letting him get overtired is worse, and he won't use it as a crutch for long.

  • look for ques when she gets sleepy. then try to keep it quiet, tv off pacifier and a blanket along her shoulder is what we do. for help on routine, BABY WHISPERER, is the best book. it teaches easy. Eat ,Active, Sleep, You time. works GREAT FOR US! and its against letting baby cry it out. teaches a shhh, pat-pat method. mine is 12wks.
