Why do dogs pee yellow?

They drink nothing but water. Food would have no effect on urine since it's a different system altogether...and when I drink nothing but water, my pee is virtually clear. So why are dog's pee bright yellow? Anyone know?

  • The yellow color in urine is due to chemicals called urobilins. These are the breakdown products of the bile pigment bilirubin. Bilirubin is itself a breakdown product of the heme part of hemoglobin from worn-out red blood cells. Most bilirubin is partly broken down in the liver, stored in the gall bladder, broken down some more in the intestines, and excreted in the feces (its metabolites are what make feces brown), but some remains in the bloodstream to be extracted by the kidneys where, converted to urobilins, it gives urine that familiar yellow tint.

Dog's urine is a brighter yellow due to the diet they eat. Their foods have different ingredients and in different amounts than human food, thus changing the color content of their urine.

  • HUH? You are seriously asking this question? Your pee is colored by what you eat and drink. Same with dogs. It is yellow because it is eliminating waste from your body. The yellower the pee the more water you should drink. Maybe dogs don't drink enough water.

  • Nachos. It's because of all the nachos. NACHOS. It's not actually pee, it's nacho cheese. To re-iterate, nachos.

  • Because purple would be, like, weird. And might stain trees and fire hydrants and stuff. So the dogs got together and agreed on yellow.

    Or, Nachos.

  • I drink nothing but water and I still pee yellow. It also has to do with the vitamins and chemicals in your body that are released through urine.

  • By the way, the urinary and digestive systems are partners to a certain degree, so urine IS affected by some of what you eat. :)
