Is it possible for birds to mate while flying?

I was in my backyard when all of a sudden I noticed 2 birds seperated from eachother the big one was flying while the small one went the other way and made a small chirp sound and all I saw was 3 feathers floating down. It happened pretty quick. Just curious.

  • At least some species do. from howstuffworks.com

White-throated swifts, birds native to the American West, sometimes copulate while falling through the air of a canyon [source: Stanford].

I believe I've also heard of some variety of eagle doing this, though I'm not certain.
