What does a.m and p.m stand for?

Like 8:00 am/8:00pm. What do those stand for?

  • AM is ante meridian, which means before noon. PM is post meridian. Therefore, noon is neither AM nor PM. And midnight is the divider between days. Each day starts and ends at midnight. So midnight is neither AM nor PM either.

    That's why insurance policies go into effect at 12:01 AM. 12:00 can't be described legally without a lot more words, such as "midnight at the end of this date" or whatever
