Why is my dishwasher doing this?

We are new to the dishwasher thing and I am having a problem. It isn't washing the dishes well at all. The cups and glasses are the worst with sand and dirt like particles in them after the wash. What could this be?

  • clean the sprayers out
clean the trap at the bottom

mine's a portable - and stuff gets into the hose to the tap.

  • If your dishwasher has a sprayer located on the bottom, then it is "blowing" food particles upward, and they are landing on your inverted glasses and dishes. To help avoid this, rinse/scrape the loose stuff off your plates before placing in the dishwasher ( I now, it sounds kind of counterproductive, but dishwashers are not garbage disposals!), and make sure any bowls are inverted or in such a way as they do not collect the dishwasher water.

  • Be very careful of how you load silverware especially anything that is skinny, or with a sharp end. These items can fall down the basket holes and prevent the bottom jets from spinning, and the result is less than clean dishes especially those on the top rack.
