Darcy woke this morning with a very scratchy throat. She keeps pulling at her ear, but isn't running a fever... When should I take her to the doctor?

Her doctor has told me before he can't prescribe anything for colds and there are no over the counter medicines for her age group. Any advice on how to keep her comfortable until she's better?

  • Pulling on her ear is a sign that it may be an ear infection.
Should you take her in? It's up to you. Kids are frequently given anit-biotics for ear infections. But they don't get better any faster - or have few symptoms - than kids who don't get any medicine. If she seems miserable, yes, take her in.

Keep her hydrated. Don't worry if she doesn't want to eat. Give her pain meds if she seems to be in pain. Give her meds to keep her fever under 102 - lower fevers actually help her get better faster so don't fight lower fevers.

  • If she is pulling on her ear, then it may not be a cold but an ear infection. How old is she that the doctor said there is nothing over the counter for her? Also, how do you know her throat is scratchy? The doctor is right that there is nothing to prescribe for colds. Try a vaporizere when she is sleeping, lots of liquids to keep hydrated, elevate her head when she is sleeping. There isn't much else you can do. Hope she feels better soon.

  • TAKE HER NOW TO THE EAR SPECIALIST. MY DAUGHTER AS A TODDLER HAD EAR INFECTIONS WITHOUT ANY FEVERS, SO I DIDN'T GIVE IT MUCH THOUGH, AND IT TURNED OUT THAT ONE OF HER EAR DRUM BUSTED BECAUSE I DIDN'T GIVE IT MUCH THOUGHT. BETTER BE SAFE THAN SORRY.
