How do you make someone godparents to your child?

Isn't that who gets your baby if you and your husband die? How do you set that up? I'm sure it has a legal side if they get your children.

  • Establishing Godparents is STRICTLY a religious or symbolic gesture...it is not a legal binding agreement. The Church wanted orphaned children to be raised by those who would adhere to the same religious worship as the parents. Godparents participate in the Baptism ceremony of the child.

The only legal binding contract as to who can become the legal guardian of your children is what you state in your Last Will and Testament (this document can change as often as you wish, should the Godparents or future legal guardians not be alive or are no longer considered your choice.

  • Being a Godparent is simply a religious thing. But if you want a sure thing with who gets your children should you and your husband die, get a will written up. Actually, every adult needs a will written anyway, but that is the only LEGAL way of saying who your children will go to.
