  • Yes, yes, and yes. I really wish that people would look for facts instead of continuing to post (and believe!) these myths. If a women is a drunk and smokes like a chimney then she shouldn't be a mother in the first place so I think breastfeeding would be the last of her concerns. However, someone who has a drink occasionally and smokes a little and eats like crap can and should still breastfeed because it is still better than formula.

  • I would say no because the baby is getting al of those toxins that are bad for the mom so of course its bad for baby....just switch to formula in that case nif whoever this person is has no self-control for either her self or her baby

  • also alcohol and smoking is on a different level than eating unhealthy so eating unhealthily to one person may be fine to another and that oersons doctor but the drinking and smoking is deffinately a NO

  • if she waits for it to clear out of her system, doesnt her breastmilk just go back to normal? (given the correct amount of time) im pretty sure it does.
the key is moderation. but if she wants to do those things all the time, she should definitely switch to formula.

  • With the drinking and smoking some of that will pass to the baby, but the moms body will take what it needs to produce bm by stealing what it needs, even if mom ends up with no calcium in her bones the bm will contain calcium. Also alcohol passes through bm at the same rate it passes through blood, so if mom bf'd at night then had a few drinks she'd be okay to bf'd in the morning. Bf'ing is not always best for each mom and baby, it is on a case by case basis.

  • One drink? Not even an issue. Our bodies are incredible filters. (And your grandma./great/grandma likey had a glass of something while nursing).

Stinking drunk>? Stupid no matter how you slice it...but alcohol passes out of the body.

Alcoholic? Baby should be in state custody. End of question there.

It's actually better to smoke and breastfeed than not...smoking raises baby's risk of asthma and other illnesses., and the breastmilk actually levels the playing field somewhat. Formula can't do that...the risks of asthma are already increased with formula feeding.

Poor diet? Hurts MOM, not baby. The milk STILL is nutritious! There's no such thing as mother's milk that's less nutritious.

So...in all cases, breastmilk is STILL better...except for the alcoholic who shouldn't be entrusted with an infant to begin with.

  • Research says those things in moderation are better than formula. You realize there are unhealthy things in formula, right?

  • no b/c the baby takes it all in that's why when you're breastfeeding your consultation nurse says no drinking, no smoking, no narcotics, so on so forth..
