When do babies consolidate their naps?

My 4.5 month old naps 3-4 times a day 45 minutes each time and sleeps 12 hours at night. Lately he's been taking one 2 hour nap. Is he starting to consolidate?

  • My daughter's second nap stopped around 7 months. She was just taking one long nap. Now, she is teething again and going through a growth spurt I think, so she takes one long one and one small "power nap" as my husband calls it.

  • My daughter is 8 months and the pediatrician said that babies should take two naps a day still. She takes a morning nap and an afternoon nap... even if she sleeps for 3 hours her first nap, she still takes a second one.

But I have a serious question to ask you--

DOES HE SLEEP 12 HOURS STRAIGHT THROUGH THE NIGHT? or just 12 hours total? :) thanks

  • -- and if it is straight through... how did you get him to do that?

  • Mine generally take one long nap by 12 mos. On an occasional crazy day it will get split up but usually one nap by then.

  • My son is 9 1/2 months and sleeps 12 hours straight at night. He'll then sleep from 9-10:30 a.m. and then 1-2:30 or 3:00 p.m. He started the two nap routine at about 6 months I believe.

  • Definitely could be dropping one of the 3-4 naps. Mine youngest stayed on 3 naps until about 6 months, then moved to 2, but occasionally she would nurse and go back to bed first thing in the morning, and then only take 2 naps later in the day.

My first daughter dropped down to one nap around 11 months, but I think this is much earlier than the average. My second, I think, will be keeping her morning nap a bit longer.
