For Military Families

I'm curious. How much do our men and women in the service get paid. I'm sure the level matters but just in general. You know, 20s, 30s, 40s Like that. I have heard they get housing allowance if they live on base but not off? Thanks!

this will give you the base  pay for rank and time in.

  • Gosh, pay can vary a lot! The different branches pay differently.

You get BAH if you live OFF base. It is the Basic Allowance Housing and is meant to pay your housing expenses. IMO though it often isn't enough in some parts of the country. If you live on base you don't get it because you aren't paying housing expenses.

IMO the best way to go into the military to maximize pay is to go to college first. When you go in with a degree you START your career as an officer. That is what my hubby did. He is 36 yrs old and is a Major. He will be "pinning on" Lt. Colonel later this year. He is currently a Squadron Commader. He is a little ahead of the norm though. He received one promotion "under the zone". That means earlier than usual. He also gets additional pay because of his career field. He currently has a weird civil service/Air National Guard job that is all 1 job and makes a little over $100,000 a yr.

  • ALL military branches have the same base pay schedule. Your MOS/job will allow different extra pay.

  • Pay just all depends on your rank and what your specialty is. There's lots of variables that make a person's pay what it is. Some people, like my husband, get paid quite a bit extra for speaking a foreign language. He's 32 and a Major. Guard and reserves work a bit differently than AD's.

You get BAH is you live off base not on. People who live on base get a house but no extra money.

  • its depends on what ur doing... different pay for different things.... and rank.... plus for ex: my husband is airborne so he gets a little extra for jumping out of planes... its just all depends...

  • Thats right we only get BAH if we live off base but we do get comrats which is food expense but if your husband uses MREs or has a meal card that pay is taken away as well. You get hazard pay if you have a dangerous job or are in areas deemed dangerous. And of course if you are in the war zone you get tax free pay but if you are on a Navy Ship and cruising around the world only certain areas are tax free and others are taxable places. So it all depends on the location and type of job.

  • It depends on your rank and time in service. Everyone gets BAH, the difference is if you live in military housing, you pay your entire BAH but everything (in most cases) is covered. If you live off base, you are given that money towards rent or house payment and utilities.
