Can I substitute shortening for the veg oil called for in my boxed cake?

  • Maybe if you melted it. I do know you can use applesauce instead though.

  • No. They behave very differently in baking.
    But yes, you can use applesauce instead.

  • Well I didn't have applesauce and used melted butter instead. It totally changed the consistency BUT my family loves the cake anyway (they must- it's almost gone!)
